“Ears?” Hank shook his head.

“Shut up, Hank,” Miya growled.

“No, I mean, that’s a practical souvenir. Not very heavy, but did you really need to hang them on a string around your neck?”

Miya fingered a wolf’s ear. “It’s not a string, it’s a necklace. Girls wear necklaces.”

Hank looked over at Sam as he pulled the trav along through the snow. “Are you sure she’s alright? She nearly died.”

“Next time you can get the water,” she muttered. “But don’t use your trigger hand to fill the bottles. That was a dodo thing to do.”

“Good advice.” Sam nodded. “Or we just set up our camp a little closer to the creek, so no one is alone when they’re getting water.”

“You insisted we set up on the hill,” Miya grumbled. “And have a snowball fight.”

“We could barely see with the snow falling like that. It’s a fine day today, though.”

“And it’s melting. You were right.”

Sam adjusted his grip on the trav. “Pretty soon it will just stay frozen. Enjoy it while it lasts. Once that happens, you’ll need to break the ice to get at the water in the creeks.”

“And to cross them, you mean?” asked Hank.

“Until the ice is thicker, yes. After that, we might walk right across one and not even notice it under the snow.”

“I’m looking forward to that,” said Hank.

“Look at you, adjusting to life down here all of a sudden.” Sam smiled.

“I’ve been working on it.”

“No, I mean you’re actually looking forwards to something down here.”

“I want to rescue Thomas.”

“There’s a lot of living to do on the way, though. This place is wild, and has plenty of things that want to eat you, but it’s beautiful.” Sam sniffed the air. “It’s a wonderful place to be. And the cold and snow can be beautiful, as well as deadly.”

“If you say so,” said Hank.

“He does say so, because he lives here. Isn’t that right, Sam?” Miya elbowed Hank. “And it is beautiful when things aren’t trying to kill you.”

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Sam looked at her with concern.

Miya took a deep breath. “I’ll be fine.”

“I know you will be, but are you okay now?”

Miya tucked the ears out of sight under her shirt. “Let’s just keep walking. I can hear the rest of them howling behind us.”
